Hi! Welcome back to Falling In Love With Fitness! I am so excited for today’s new blog post! I will be discussing what workouts are actually beneficial and help you see results!

The phrase “working out” is so broad. According to PubMed Central, “Working out is a planned, structured, and repetitive physical activity aimed at improving and maintaining physical fitness, health, and wellness.” Basically, anytime you are moving your body with purpose for a certain period of time, you are working out! Being physically active is a gift that many of us take for granted. Movement is medicine and extremely important to living a healthy lifestyle.
Before I started my weight loss journey, I was convinced the only way to loss weight was cardio, specially running. At the time, I absolutely hated running and wanted no parts of it, so I went to the internet for advice. I found tons of fitness influencers preaching different workout plans to help people look like them and achieve the same results. Overwhelmed is an understatement to how I was feeling. There were so many different types of workouts, so I had no clue where to start.
Since I was new to the fitness scene, I decided to start with low-impact workouts like walking because I did it every day. Over time, I grew to love going for walks outside, and the more I did it, the easier it started to feel. Once I started seeing results from the walks, I wanted to try out some different forms of exercise. I started going to different group fitness classes at my university gym. They offered so many different options, including spin, pilates, yoga, and more. After trying out a few classes, I found that I loved the spin classes, but I absolutely hated the yoga classes. I am not flexible, so it felt extremely hard to me, and the spin classes felt like a fun challenge compared to casual biking.
I learned so many lessons during my weight loss/fitness journey, and the most important was that there is not just one way to lose weight. So, in turn, there is not one type of exercise that is the most beneficial for everyone. We are all on different journeys with different goals. I personally love going for runs, but you would not catch me in a yoga class. Now you may love yoga, and I would never tell you it is not an effective form of exercise just because I don’t like it.
Working out is supposed to be fun, and if you are miserable, the workout is not going to be beneficial, even if you are burning tons of calories. I have listed some of my favorite types of workouts below that have worked well for me. Remember, these work for me, and they do not have to work for you. If you are new and want a place to start, this list is great. But don’t forget that it is all about preference and finding what works for you!
